Welcome to Autumn

Kiss sweet summer goodbye, here comes Autumn!

Autumn

We heard the sigh of the first autumnal wind, and even the water had acquired a grayer hue.  The sumac, grape, and maple were already changed, and the milkweed had turned to a deep rich yellow.

"The Four Seasons" by Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

The yellow flowers are called Zig-Zag Goldenrod and they are a native plant.

The white blooms of the Royal Standard hosta have a lovely fragrance.

The bees are still busy in the flowers. Do you see them?

The first brightly colored leaf I found this season.

The Sweet Autumn Clematis is filled with this type of
bee and many smaller ones as well. They and I too, love the heavenly fragrant blossoms!

The gorgeous colors are emerging on these leaves I found in the yard.

Today it really felt like fall. A cool nip in the air, and the freshest of breezes blowing a few leaves from the trees really set the mood for me.  We will be visiting an orchard this weekend for a little apple picking. Hope to have a few nice photos to share with you all.

Have a lovely weekend everyone! ~~ Diane

Every Leaf....

Welcome November! This morning the new month began by softly gliding in like a falling leaf.  Long before dawn November came gently drifting down from the tall maple trees and came to rest on the still green grass. After the boisterous celebration of Hallows Eve, let us start November on a calmer note. I have some lovely images I would like to share with you all today.  Enjoy!

We keep our friends and fellow bloggers on the east coast in our thoughts and prayers as they start the long process of recovery from the awful storm.  Thank you all for visiting. ~ Diane ~

A Beautiful Fall Morning...

Our weather has turned quite cold already, but the sun somehow always makes me feel a bit warmer on these blustery days.  The steady breeze made it look as though it was raining leaves.

Guy was enjoying some fresh air and sun while keeping an eye on our other cat Dot.

I love looking at the leaves and their various shapes and colors. I'm always amazed at how beautiful something that may seem so ordinary, is so beautiful. Guy enjoyed playing with them and even brought one in the house to keep as a souvenir.  It lasted about ten minutes before he had it shredded and scattered all over the floor.

Guy Noir

Guy Noir turned six months old this month.  He is a very nice looking boy and he has the most beautiful long tail.  He is very sweet and loves to play and get into all sorts of mischief.

Red Oak

The sugar maples turn this glorious yellow-gold color. I just had to get a few pictures looking up at the bright blue sky.  I don't believe there was a cloud anywhere in sight!

Our little lake is pretty quiet now.  The resident egrets and herons left several weeks ago and the ducks left last week after several nights of freezing temperatures. Now we will only see a few stragglers passing through headed on down to warmer states like Arkansas and Louisiana.

White Birch

Guy was quite amazed at the leaves that were raining down on him.  I have to remind myself that this is all new to him and the first time he has experienced autumn and a changing season. He spied our small crab apple tree and decided today was a good day to try climbing it.  He was very proud of himself and after climbing back down, climbed it again!
Happy Birthday little Guy Noir!

Someone Came Knocking . . . Oh it's October!

From Poems for Boys and Girls (1945) compiled by Marjorie Barrows and illustrated by Lois Maloy.

Late fall corn field

October you are a very fun month! The ultimate master of the costume change, you start out with glorious fall colors draping the landscape from the top of the trees to the pumpkin laden front porches! The brightly colored leaves are scattered across the lawns like confetti. Then suddenly when the leaves are gone, you have changed to a minimalistic palette of more subdued grays and brown. October you then cap it all off with a fantastic party called Halloween! Oh yes, you came knocking and we answered!

The Feel of Fleece

Yes the season I knew was soon to arrive is here.  No not the season of Autumn, but the season of Fleece. I have joked before about the use of summer fleece here in Minnesota, but since our summer had over 30 days of 90 degree or above temperatures, I didn't have much need for my summer fleece. Here we are though, beginning the onset of official Fall and Winter fleece weather.

We had two cold nights in a row last week and on the second night I woke up and had to pull another blanket onto the bed.  I knew it was time to turn on the furnace and find my fleece. The cats have demanded their fleece as well and have been snuggling down into their blankies and dreaming about things cats dream about. Since we humans do not have fur, or real fleece or big fluffy squirrel tails, we need fake fleece.

This morning our low temperature was 35 and when I got out of bed I felt that coolness in the room before the furnace kicked into its warm up setting.  So I felt that little chill and I knew it was time, time to break out the fleece. This morning I pulled a large plastic bin down from my closet shelf and began rummaging for something warm to wear today. I found my favorite berber fleece tunic. Oooh the cozy comfort of fleece!

Red Wing Pottery Maple Leaf Dish 1950's
Grabbing a cup of coffee and gazing out the window at the falling leaves, I'm thinking about other cozy things today.  My husband found this pretty Red Wing dish a few weeks ago and I am imagining a bunch of maple pecan cookies or some Butterscotch Pumpkin Cookies heaped inside. Baking always makes me feel cozy and sharing with friends even more so!

Evans Enameled Tray 1950's

The gorgeous tray above was made for use as an ash tray and was sold in sets that included cigarette lighters. I love the fact that it now will be used for holding something more benign, like change or mail.  The color and texture of the enamel and the leaves in antique brass, just shouts fall to me.  The glorious show that mother nature puts on for us with the changing leaf colors is just another reminder to unpack the fleece.

As I watch the sun shining through the golden tinged leaves I am thinking cozy thoughts. My kitten Guy jumps onto my lap and starts kneading on my fleece covered arm.  His purr makes me feel that all is right with the world, especially while wrapped in fleece.
