The Not So Humble Dish Towel

As I was listing some of my embroidered dish towels on my Etsy store site, I started to think of the other ways they could be used. They have always been there for us to dry the dishes and mop up the spills, but surely there are some more creative uses for our steadfast towels. Here are a few ideas for using the humble dish towel.

A Rose Wine Gift Wrapped
  • Use a towel to wrap a gift.
  • Add a towel to a gift basket.
  • Line a tray or basket with a towel and fold it over your baked goods to keep them warm.
  • Use a towel as a place-mat or napkin.
  • Wrap one around a potted plant or vase and secure with ribbon.
  • Lay some down the length of your table for a table runner.
  • Use one as a mixer or coffee maker cover.
  • Make them into cute kitchen or bathroom curtains by adding clip-on curtain rings and sliding them onto a tension rod.
  • Tie a towel around a casserole to make handles and take to your next potluck.
  • Use one as an apron.
  • Wrap a towel around a bottle of wine or sparkling cider for a nice hostess gift.
  • Be a trend setter and wear one as a scarf!

One great idea is using a towel as a wine bag.  I first recommend ironing the towel so you will have crisp straight edges. This also makes the folding process easier.

Place the bottle along one side of the fabric so that the bottle's top meets the top of the fabric. Align your towel so that the design will show in the front when rolled up. If using an embroidered towel, especially the large flour sack type, you may need to square up the folds when you iron. The easiest way to explain this is that you are doing an accordion fold. Once you have the towel ironed, flip it over and tuck your bottle into the folded area. Make sure your bottle is at the opposite end of the embroidered area.  Roll the bottle and dish towel  together evenly and secure at the neck with a ribbon.

Hope you have some fun with those towels! Won't your friend be impressed next time you show up for dinner with one of these!
