The Hunger Moon

Welcome February...

In February there are days,
Blue, and nearly warm,
When horses switch their tails, and ducks
Go quacking through the farm.
When all the world turns round to feel
The sun upon its back...
When winter lifts a little bit
And spring peeks through the crack!

Dorothy Aldis

Poem and artwork (by artist Robert J. Lee) borrowed from my personal collection of vintage books and book art.

February is sometimes referred to as the Hunger Moon due to the difficulty obtaining food at this time of year. Of course that was before supermarkets and Costcos. However, me must not forget that there are still many people that do not have enough food for their families.

Food insecure—At times during the year, these households were uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources for food.

  • 14.0 percent (17.4 million) of U.S. households were food insecure at some time during 2014. (source)

Another more common name used now days is the Snow Moon, for obvious reasons, the snow piles that get even higher in the month of February.

In fact we are expecting more snow this week, just a little bit, most of the heavy snow is going to blanket the states south of us. We still have yet to see a real blizzard here this winter. I'm actually a little disappointed!

Stay safe and warm wherever you are,
and thanks again for stopping in to visit!
If you are able to donate to your local food shelf this month,
I'm sure they would greatly appreciate it.

  1. Thanks Diane for the reminder. The shelves of the Food Bank sometimes have slim pickings after the holidays. I haven't donated myself since the end of November. Such sweet book photos and sentiment.

Hope you get your snowstorm soon. :)

  2. Diane, sometimes our Food Bank goes completely empty. It is very important that we try to remember to give to the food banks so that we have a place where folks can get some food.

    1. Same here Kay... we have a good church coop type place where all the churches pitch in together and they even run low at times.

  6. Hi Diane,
I didn’t have a New Year Resolution, but now I do! Whenever I go food shopping, I always intend to buy a couple of extra tins to drop into the food bank, and then I forget – not any more. Thank you for the nudge.
It’s wet in the UK but no snow, although there has been some in Scotland and a tiny bit in London. Somerset seems to get away with it most years – now I’ve said that we will probably have lots. Hugs xx
    PS Love the book

  7. Diane,
Happy February! That is special of you to acknowledge those who are unable to get food during these cold winter months. I've never heard of the Hunger Moon before. I would love to visit your area and experience all the snow that you're having. It looks so beautiful, although I know it's hard to live through sometimes when it's deep. It's been raining here, but the sun always seems to peek through now and then in California even in the winter months.

    love, ~Sheri

  8. Hi human, Diane,

Here's to a most pawsitive February, my kind human friend. That's wonderful pawem. I love a bit of pawetry and Hunger Moon is pawesome!

My human, Gary, has worked with the homeless, the rough sleepers. This time of the year when it can indeed be bitterly cold in the Northern Hemisphere, a kind gesture, some warm food and drink, goes a long ways to those poor, yet inspirational souls on the streets.

Stay warm, it's almost tropical over here in England, almost!

    Pawsitive wishes and doggy kisses,

    Penny xx
