Sweet April

Welcome Sweet April!

Here in Minnesota, we finally know that winter is over in the month of April. During many years, the first week of April brings a heavy coating of snow. We try to ignore this inconvenience because we know that the moisture will help our plants grow. Mostly we just wait, wait for the snow to melt and underneath we find the beauty of spring has already begun. The beauty of growing things that is. The rejuvenation of life and youth has begun for my garden anyway! This year we have a head start on spring and our yards are green and without snow. Easter will soon be here and spring will have finally sprung. Here are a few images borrowed from The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden from the month of April.

  1. Happy April :) All of our snow was gone and we woke up to flurries - we should have known Mother Nature would be up to an April Fool's joke at our expense! It's still coming down and accumulating - I'm sure it'll all be gone in a few days.

This is such a lovely book - I almost purchased it in a second-hand store a few months back and now wish I had... I think I'll check back and see if it's still there.

  2. I love her journals! I have this newer edition (1994), which she wrote in 1905. I also have an older book titled "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady", (1977)edition, which she wrote in 1906. The latter I picked up at a garage sale and it was literally stored in the garage and had a very unpleasant odor! Several months in a plastic bag with baking soda finally cured it! So sorry about your snow, hopefully it will be gone soon! ;)

  3. Happy April! This is one of my favourite months of the year. We had a relatively easy winter with little snow and mild weather. I loved it, but I'm not sure the garden did. I'll see what effect it's had on my plants very soon. That is a lovely poem to start the month with. (This is the second time I'm posting a comment. The other one disappeared without warning. It was really, really weird! I wonder if blogger is carrying out some April fool's jokes...)

    2. What a beautiful post. I too love April especially the bulb flowers that begin to emerge. My wedding anniversary is mid-April so that is good too. ~ Alicia

  5. This book never goes out of fashion - it has some of the most beautiful watercolour illustrations I have ever seen.

April is my birthday month so I always see it as special (and the start of a new year for me!)

  6. I used to own a copy of this book - the illustrations are really beautiful. That's a good tip for old and musty books! I really must try this because I buy a lot of second-hand books and sometimes they smell bad enough to put me off reading them.

    1. Sulky Kitten, I've also heard of people putting fresh scented kitty litter in a bag with a smelly book. So if you have any on hand .... I haven't tried it myself!
