Summer in the City

No I have not fallen off the face of the earth. I am still here!
Just busy, oh so busy. Trying to fit in all the summer, work and play activities ... so little time and so much to do!

Because of course now is the time for garage, estate sales and flea markets!

This cute Bunny shaped baby dish is from the 1950's.
It sold the day after I listed it! I can see why, it's cute as can be!

But.....

Even Cuter than that are these darling cardboard wall art figures of
"The Three Little Kittens". Including  Mom and the Pie! They are available in my shop.

 "I love you this much!!"

"Where's the tea?"

"Oh, we're so sorry Mom, somehow we lost our mittens,
but please can't we have some pie?"

Now I must go on this lovely evening and
catch up with all of you on your blogs.
See you soon!

A Look Back

Sometimes parting with my vintage collections is not easy.  Even though most have been purchased with the idea of selling them, I occasionally get attached to an item and am sorry to see it go.

I decided to take a look back at a few of my favorite items that sold last year.
They are all now in their happy, new homes.

Pink Rosina Teacup

Pink Sleigh Planter

Alice in Wonderland Paint Set

Little Brown Bear on Log Planter

Miss Sniff

Puff the Blue Kitten

Red Cat Matchbox Holder

The Sleeping Fairy

The Squirrel on the Log planter

And my all time favorites!
The Cats in Hats framed prints!

Here I have digitally cleaned them up and want to share them with you!
Right click on image and click 'save image as' to download.

I've also included a bit about the meaning of the flowers they wear.

Rose
The meaning of a pink rose: Grace, gladness, joy, perfect happiness, please believe me, gratitude, admiration, gentility.

Violet
The meaning of the violet: Thoughts of you, blue love.

Hope
The meaning of the forget-me-not: True love, hope, remembrance, memories.

Pansy
The meaning of the pansy: Recipient is being thought about, loyalty. The flower's name comes from the French word pensée which means thought or remembrance. Because pansies often have three colors in one blossom, they have been symbolic of the Trinity.

I hope you enjoyed my look back at some of these cute vintage items.
Have there been any items that you have parted with that you
wish you could have back?

Cats in Hats

While researching on the net for information on some cute kitten prints I picked up a while back at an estate sale, I came across the blog post about something we are all familiar with.  We may not be familiar with the actual name for this phenomenon, so I thought I would share a bit about this not-so-new style of art and photography.

Cats Wearing Hats - available in my Etsy store CraveCute now!

It's called anthropomorphism, or in simpler terms, animals dressed or acting like people.  I found this fabulous blog post about the history of this strange but utterly cute art form. We owe much of this fun form of art to illustrator Louis Wain (1860-1939) and photographer Harry Frees (1879-1953).

Louis Wain

Apparently these type of pictures gained popularity when an American photographer named Harry Whittier Frees began using his own pets and the neighbors to created some silly and adorable pictures of cats and other animals which were used in postcards and children's books.

Harry W. Frees

The story goes that Frees was celebrating a birthday dinner with friends and there was a paper hat involved.  Each member of the dinner party took turns wearing the paper hat as it was passed around the table. When it got to the cat, the hat was placed on his head and he sat dutifully while Frees grabbed his camera and started taking pictures. The silly cat photo has been with us ever since!

One of my all time favorite books from my childhood came to mind when I started writing this post.  I had to go digging through my bookcase and I found it.  The book is called Captain Kitty, written by Godfrey Lynn and illustrated by Elizabeth Webbe.

Captain Kitty with his adorable family!

Queen Kitty looks quite regal in her pearls!

As Captain Kitty said, "We've really had a lovely time.  Alas, it's time to go!"

See you next time! ~~ Diane

More Paper Mache Tips...

Today I want to add a few more tips about making paper mache pulp. The recipes I posted yesterday are for the frugal crafter and use a minimal amount of purchased products. However, if you would like a smoother sculpture try the following.

Add about 2 cups of Instant Paper Mache Mix (available at art or craft stores) and a bit more water. Mix with your pulp base.

Soak one roll of white toilet paper, remove the cardboard core, pull the paper apart with your fingers. Squeeze out excess water and mix into your pulp base.

Feel free to add your tips in the comment section.

And there's more...
This has nothing to do with paper mache, it's just cute!

Have a fantastic Wednesday!
