Black Cat Awareness Month

I couldn't let October pass without talking about ...

The Black Cat

Humane association workers say black cats still encounter a certain amount of discrimination in the world, and many arrive every year at pet adoption centers because someone didn't want a black cat around the house. Luckily this perception is changing and black cats are now regularly finding good loving homes across America.

My very own adopted black cat, Guy Noir.

Guy posing as a black lion, perhaps?

Stalking...... and that's why he wears a harness, collar and leash!

Black cats have been stereotyped for centuries. The "Halloween" hissing black cat with the familiar arched-back was the standard for those images. However, times are changing and most of the superstitions have fallen away.  Many black cats enjoy their time with a loving family and are no longer considered scarey.

Black cats and dogs are still some of the last animals adopted.  If you find that you are going to be adding a cat or dog to your family in the future, please consider a black one.  Please share any stories you have about your own black cat!

Next time I'll be sharing more photos of autumn leaves and some scarecrows that I saw at my recent visit to our arboretum!

  1. I love black cats! (All cats really. I miss having one. There was a stray cat in our front yard the other night and, pathetically, I watched it for like half an hour. Lol!) Our Wendy Kitty had a kitten once that was black. We named it "Bagghera." (Another Disney name).

I really loved that first pic you took of Guy Noir with the fall leaves. It is flawless. I also love the one with the ducks. Great, GREAT photos right there.

  2. We had a little kitten run up to Daisy's house from the neighbors, but her dad didn't want it because it was a black cat.

  3. Wonderful post. This is a very important message. Thank you for this! I have a black cat that we adopted from the humane society and I can't imagine how empty this household would be without her. She is the sweetest, most loving cat. It's sad that people overlook these beautiful animals just because of their colour. I absolutely adore them.

And, I wanted to tell you that the first image of Guy Noir surrounded by the leaves is spectacular! OHMYGOSH...what an awesome photograph. Make a LARGE print of it and frame it.

    1. Yes he loves the leaves, and even though these are artificial, he is always searching through them for a mouse, or maybe a chipmunk!

    1. I know what you mean Mary, it was two years before we got another black kitty after our other black kitty died. It was meant to be.

  6. I had Custer, a black cat we adopted from the humane society, for 15 years. He was a wonderful boy, full of mischief and sweetness. Personally, I think black cats are gorgeous and you're right, give them a chance if you are adopting. :)

  7. Hi Diane, talking about your cats (on Etsy) reminded me to come and visit your blog, I’m glad I did, I love the first picture. Guy looks very cosy in those leaves.
I’ve always thought of black cats as good luck, in Britain if one crosses the path in front of you, it means it’s going to be a really good day. x

  8. Dear Diane - It always amazes me that people don't want black cats or dogs. I have had two totally black ones and now have one that is black and white. If hubby allowed it I would have another black one for sure. My sweetest kitty ever was Tootsie and she was entirely all black - no white on her whatsoever. Still miss her. Thanks Diane for sharing about this situation. Please give Guy a hug for me.

  9. Well black cats are the best, lucky I would say. My lovely black labrador (who is quite grey now) is gorgeous and so cute. I remember a huge white cat from when I was little, didn't particularly like that one??

  11. Wowness..such gorgeous images..especially the very first one..stole my heart..I love Guy Noir so much..stunning portrait, so autumny and magical! I love black cats and can relate. Many times when I was a little girl I received such negative comments for having such dark black hair. ..etc...so I feel a kinship with black cats and all dark animals. it is sad thing cats are judged by that! They are such beauties if you ask me!

Fantastic post...I always enjoy my visits her! Stunning photography..thank for sharing.

  13. Stunning photos and the music goes perfectly with this post! Black cats have a special place in my heart. I have had 3 of them in my lifetime and they have been such beautiful companions. I adopted them all at a local animal shelter (two who were brother and sister in 1988), the sister lived until 2002, and then another one in 2002. Thank you so much for sharing this.
