The Fields of Gold

One of my favorite colors of Autumn is Gold. Brash orange and fiery red seem to outshine poor gold for most of the season. Mostly, I like the combination of all the colors, but it's the memories of golden fields that I cling to.

Gold always reminds me of my first eighteen years of life living on my parents farm.  We were in a rural area and at least an hours drive to a large city.  The fields were full of golden wheat and russet hued milo.

The picture above is not mine, but an example of a typical wheat field.  After the wheat was harvested, my father would bale the straw and keep it to use as bedding for the cattle and pigs.  This time of year brings out my nostalgic side remembering the family gatherings at my parents and grandparents homes, now all gone.

My view has changed now and the gold I see from my window is one of the golden and russet leaves on the trees. I love this view and wouldn't trade it for the world.  The remarkable thing about us humans is that we can imagine and when I close my eyes for a moment, I can still see the golden fields of my childhood home.

As I look towards the blue sky and heaven, I see the golden leaves of our sugar maple trees and I am thankful for the wonderful past I've had and the promise of an even better future once I reach my own "Golden" years.

Welcome November, the month of Thankfulness.  ~~ Diane

  1. The plains of Minnesota are very similar to the plains of Manitoba where I grew up, so this post strikes a real chord with me.

  2. Such a lovely post! I've been feeling very nostalgic lately, remembering so many special moments from my childhood, and missing people that are gone. Must be something in the air :)

For the first day of what should be a cold month, it's very mild. I hope this warm weather continues for awhile, which will make winter feel shorter. That is something I'll be grateful for!

  6. Beautiful! Both the photos and the memories of your childhood home. (I think this song is especially lovely sung by songbird, Eva Cassidy... how I wish she had lived longer.)

  11. Just so lovely, your post. I lived next to cornfields as a child, up to the age of 13, and when I close my eyes I can still see them, and hear the skylarks singing, I think i was quite lucky. They built a huge estate on the fields after that....sad, it brought me a good friend, but what a loss!

  14. Dear Diane - how truly blessed you are to have grown up with fields of gold and now as well live near the beauty of the water. It is wonderful to revisit our childhood memories but also great to appreciate where we are today. Looks like you know that my friend. Hope your November is lovely. Thanks for sharing a part of your past.

  15. Love all of these beautiful fall images! There is definitely a chill in the air now that November is here. This is my favorite time of year, because it means that Thanksgiving is coming, and it is my favorite holiday after Halloween (if you can call Halloween a holiday!)

  17. Hello Diane, your post stirred up similar memories of my own. I spent the first 21 years of my life on a farm (in the UK). I have loads of good memories from those years, wheat fields, hay barns, feeding the cattle and picking up the hens' eggs to name just a few. Mum and dad are no longer here, and I’ve already reached my golden years but the memories don’t fade. Thank you for sharing such a lovely post.

  20. I am lovin' these Autumn pictures, Diane. This is such a wonderful season, and I am savoring every minute of it. There is a lot of golds where you live, so pretty. Here in California, we see a lot of the orange colors in the trees. It is such a sight.

    Have a peaceful weekend.

    Love,
    ~Sheri
