A Shiny Brite Day

I have to admit that until my husband brought home these vintage Christmas ornaments from a garage sale, I hadn't thought much about collecting Shiny Brite. Now that I have been doing a bunch of research on them, I am starting to think I'm missing out!

I've decide that because these are plain I will not keep them, but hold out for some of the more decorative ones.  Actually I am more partial to the fancier shaped glass and diorama glass ornaments.  So this batch will be put up for sale in my shop.

I've learned a few things about Shiny Brite.  The ones after WWII up until about 1960, have the crimped and stamped "Shiny Brite made in USA" on the caps.  I'm still trying to sort out the cap issue on another box that says "Shiny Brite", because the caps are not crimped or stamped.  So many questions!

I don't like to put things in my shop until I have thoroughly investigated their age, history etc.  So there are a couple of boxes that may have to wait until next year before they go up for sale.  This box and contents will be in my Etsy shop for sale today or in the near future.

My husband bought more plain ornaments which I will post later, but a few neat old German and Italian ones were included.  The diorama of the church above is probably from Italy and dates from the 1940's.  I haven't decided whether to sell the diorama ornament yet.

It was a blustery, cold day yesterday when I was working on this post.  The kitties had been outside for awhile, just enough to get a bit chilly.  They were very happy to get back in the house where it was warm.

There was a bit of a kerfuffle over who got to sleep on the cozy blanket in the corner of my office.  Dot and Guy had a bit of fun. As you see, Guy won!  When I noticed him sleeping there, he looked so cute, I had to get a picture.  He was half asleep when I woke him up for the photo shoot.

I hope you all have a Bright and Shiny day too!

  1. *sigh* The Christmas decorations of my childhood are now "vintage." As am I, I suppose.

  2. Diane,
These colored ornaments are so pretty. I like the fact that they're just plain and simple. That ornament from the 1940's is so special. Looking at these ornaments made me smile and think about my mom because she used to put plain RED glass balls on her tree every year. They were such pretty trees, but it wasn't until I was married and had kids of my own that I started to collect ornaments that were unique and decorative. I miss my mom's old RED Christmas balls, and I've been missing her too. Thank you for the sweet memories.

    Love,

    1. Sheri, I have to admit, I was getting a bit attached to these lovelies as I was photographing them! As I was researching Shiny Brite, I recognized some of the decorated ones as those that were on our tree when I was growing up. Unfortunately they are also gone along with my Mom, so I understand your feelings about this. We do have those sweet memories though.

  4. Christmas baubles have that magical way of transporting you back to childhood, the glass birds that are popular now, we had them when I was little, I loved them, with the feathered tail and clip on feet, I find them fascinating, and just love them. :)

    1. Thanks, I think.... what does vintage usually look like? OK, I get it, vintage is not for everyone, except the vintage I collect and sell which is always cute and adorable!!

  7. Beware of catching the "Shiny Brite Bug"! At first you think "Oh, I don't need to keep the solid colored ones. I can sell those". But pretty soon even the solid colored ones start tempting you! And you find yourself wanting to hang on to them too! After all, they're still Shiny and Brite even without a fancy decoration or indentation on them! Just thought I'd warn you. :)

  9. Love those ornaments, so pretty, especially that diorama one! I have a few vintage ornaments, but don't use them because my cat Mooby would destroy them. He's way too curious!

  10. Diane - seeing those ornaments brings back so many childhood memories...when we decorate the tree at my folks we pull a lot of those old type out and place on the tree. It is always sad to see one get broken (which unfortunately happens sometimes). I am not quite in the mood yet but seeing your bright ones is helping me move along :) ! Now can I just curl up with Guy in your cozy corner? Looks like a wonderful place to rest awhile. Have a great day.
