One Last Gift from the Garden

My garden decided to give me a gift before going to sleep for the winter.

It came from my lovely Hansa rose. At the very top of the bush on some new growth, a cluster of roses formed.  I noticed it last week and thought how pretty but lonely they looked up there.  After hearing the forecast for the weekend, I decided to cut the little cluster off of the mother plant.

I pampered them and babied them for a few days and photographed them from every angle so I would remember this October gift.  I wish I could have captured their scent too.

"With its leaves so rich and heavy with elation
and its crimson face made brighter with visions of divinity
the shadow of a certain rose looks just like an angel eating light."

Aberjhani, Visions of a Skylark Dressed in Black

The seasons are in a hurry to catch up and we have had below average temperatures all week.  I have hurriedly unpacked my sweaters and fleece in preparation for what is to come!  Tiny snow flakes have been flying around and landing on the backs of my black cats! Dot especially dislikes the cold weather.

My first pumpkin pies have come out of the oven this week and I have seen the Junco birds in the yard! These are all sure signs that Autumn is half-way over and Winter may be arriving early!

Stay warm my friends! ~~ Diane

    1. I love my Hansa rose, it is a hardy northern shrub rose.

  2. That rose is an amazing colour!!!! I love the vase too. Can't believe you have some snow flakes, I get mixed up as to where people are in the world? We are still just hanging onto some warmth here in Yorkshire, which is nice, but a bit strange at this time of year :)

    1. Yes it is a shocking pink rose! The vase was my Mom's and yes there were some areas in our state that had about an inch of snow this week.

  3. Such wondrous photos of the resplendent colours that soon will sleep. And with advent of the impending winter, the cycle of a spring rebirth.

Beautifully articulated, my friend. And my English country garden has only just seen the symbols of autumn.

  4. Diane,
Oh my, these roses are simply beautiful, and the color! I have a few roses in my front yard still blooming, and I smile as I pass them every day. I love that green plate next to the roses. It goes perfect with your flowers.

What a beautiful post this is today. I hope you are enjoying the Autumn days.

    1. It's hard to tell from the photo, but it is a large shallow bowl. Very old... from Germany. I picked it up at an estate sale last year.

  8. I did the same thing with my new Yabba Dabba Doo roses. When they fade, the petals will go into a little potpouri bowl in my bathroom.

  10. Ah Diane - I love your last gift from the garden. The rose is stunning. Sometimes God saves the best for last. It is cold here too but no snow - although further north they had a wet heavy one and power outages. The long range forecast shows a warming trend again. Hope you get some Indian Summer! Take care and have a great week-end.
