Please Invent a New Cone of Silence

"throwback -- A sudden reminder of the past. This can be brought about by hearing a song from high school, seeing an ex..... Similar to a flashback." source
I've decided to start a new periodic Thursday theme called "Throwback Thursday"; it may or may not occur again, just depends if anyone else finds it amusing. Because after all this blog is all about you the reader. Well OK not all about you, it's mostly about me and my weird thoughts about stuff.  But well I guess I am getting to that age when I start to sound like my parents, when they said things like "Do you remember back when ...blah, blah?" I unfortunately usually stopped listening about then.

Anyway this whole idea about the cone of silence came about when my husband and I were trying to have a quiet lunch out the other day.  We ended up sitting across from an obnoxious cell phone user and thus my husband reminded me about the cone of silence. No idea what I am talking about??? Then you are a mere child and let me educate you.

This gadget was used on the old Get Smart show (1965-1970)  on NBC.  The gag was that it didn't actually work and they could never hear each other but everyone else could hear them. Still no idea what I am talking about, here is a classic bit from the show.

Well I would like a cone of silence that really does work in a slightly different way!  Ideally  with the press of a button the cone of silence would envelope me in a euphoric force field type bubble that sound waves could not penetrate or at the least would be diminished to a whisper.  I  can think of several times this would come in handy.

For example the other day while shopping a mother and her sweet toddler were discussing whether said child should be hanging on the side of the cart.  A disagreement ensued and said child started shrieking so loud I thought me ear drums would burst!  Or how about those pesky cellphone users like the one we encountered in  the restaurant that answer the phone at the table and proceed to get louder as the call progresses.  Then there are the people who turn their car stereos up loud enough to make  my car windows vibrate. Feel free to comment with your own examples!

I want some high-tech company to come up with a new cone of silence, please!

What was one of the favorite catch phrases of Maxwell Smart?

Friday I will return to my cute posts and the announcement of the winner of the May towel and a NEW Giveaway item! So please come back and enter!

  1. I'm not familiar with that show, but I'd love to have a cone of silence when I'm beside a squealing child on a plane especially on a 13 hour flight! People who yell on their cell phones irritate the hell out of me as well.

    1. Well SK you are probably much too young, I can barely remember it myself!! I agree, the kids on the plane can be horrid, if they aren't screaming they are kicking the back of my seat!

  2. Being a Crone Goddess *ahem*, I remember "Get Smart" and the Cone of Silence very well! I'd like a Cone of Silence when I go to those sports bar type restaurants where the music AND the TVs set to sports stations are always simultaneously blaring! AND THEN add in the annoying cellphone talkers, etc. on top of it. CACAPHONY!!!!!

    1. Haha! Crone Goddess, love that! Actually I am probably older than all of you...and that is why in my elder years I am becoming more curmudgeony!

  3. "Missed it by that much." I loved that show, and used to watch it all the time. Oh my...am I really that old? LOL...

Whining children! Oh, I cannot stand it. I couldn't stand it when my own kids did it, and so I did not permit it. Sounds harsh, but whining was not something I tolerated. If my kids wanted to ask for something, or discuss something with me, I expected them to speak in normal tones. It was not up for debate.

I really like the idea of "Throwback Thursday". The age I'm at...you can go quite a way back and I'll know what you're talking about!

  4. Dear Diane - I had forgotten how funny "Get Smart" was - I think throwback Thurs. will be a delight. Of course as I have said before you and I are of the same vintage. I know when I visit the bookstore and someone is on their cell phone - I wish for a cone of silence!! Have a great day.

    1. Oh yes, it was very stupidly funny! It was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, two comic geniuses! I loved agent 99 (Barbara Feldon)and of course agent 86 Maxwell Smart (Don Adams).

  5. I never watched this show, a little too early for me, but I do know about it and I think it's hilarious! Cell phones get on my nerves so much! Especially in grocery stores! Why are you on the phone asking your other half what they want? You just came from home? You don't know? LOL! Don't get me started about screaming kids! LOL! We were brought up to speak and ask, if we screamed or whined, you were in trouble! Oh, and I hate people who have to talk so loud on their cell phones, so everyone can here! I really don't care! Great post Diane ;o)

    1. Sometimes when talking on my cellphone to may husband also on his cellphone, I feel like I am in the Get Smart inferior cone of silence, since we are both saying "I can't hear you, what?", "What?".

  6. Wish they would hurry up and invent one that I could use selectively - at the grocery store, at work, you name it.

  7. Yes!! I remember the cone of silence!! I would use it on the train I take to work. All I want to do is close my eyes and rest a little before I have to head to the office and the last thing I need is some self-important dude yapping about work first thing in the morning! Seriously, can't it wait 30 minutes until you get to the office?

  8. hahahaha! The cone of silence! How I remember it! I laughed as much today as I did then. Thanks for your comment about Google+. Maybe I was the one who hit the wrong button and invited all of those people to my circles. I never thought of that! I'm glad I found you though!

  9. Cell phones drive me mad, or rather the people the people shouting into them do. I've not seen the show but a cone of silence sounds like a wonderful idea.
