The Mist and All . . .

This poem couldn't describe our weather here any better! It has been misty and gray for the past two days. I can't complain. It is getting me into the fall-winter spirit of things. As I sip my hot tea and look out at the misty, bare branches on the trees, I've been thinking...  I like the fall...

The Mist and All by Dixie Willson from Poems for Boys and Girls, illustrated by Lois Maloy

I have been thinking about the fact that it seems as though I just took down the Christmas tree a couple of months ago. I am also wondering how to tie the tree to the entertainment center so Guy doesn't topple the whole thing over.  I've been thinking that I need to buy Christmas cards because I used up my stash last year. I'm thinking we need to haul some wood closer to the house so I don't have to trudge through the snow drifts that I hope will be here after Thanksgiving. Oh yes, I like the 'gray November day, and bare dead boughs that gently sway against my pane, I like the rain.'

Sometimes I just enjoy days like this where I can just stop and take note of all the things that have happened and new events soon to come. I am a planner so when I don't have time to plan I start to feel very disconnected and out of control. Days like this are great times to slow down and just think and plan and write.

So for now I think I'll just 'tend my cozy fire a bit. I like the fall -- the mist and all.'

I hope you all have a pleasant week ahead!

  1. A lovely, cozy post :) That page looks like it comes straight out of a childhood book of poems. I know what you mean - while November is definitely my least favourite month, it's gray, no-nothing days do lend themselves to introspection and we (hopefully) tend to slow down long enough to appreciate the little pleasures in life, like a warm fire.

    1. In fact it did, from Poems for Girls and Boys. Oh yes and we are back on real time now so it is getting dark at 4:45 in the afternoon!

  2. You always find the loveliest things Diane, and this little poem is one of them. When I was younger I loved November because it was always the foggiest month. I see it as a breathing space before all the Christmas festivities kick off. have a great week.

  3. I would have LOVED fall, too, but it skips this part of Texas. Even now, the high usually reaches 90 degrees. Still, I am enjoying it getting darker earlier. I've been waiting for this since the summer. I've really been in the mood for dark, rainy days this year. I've had enough of all this sunshine. :p

And FYI - I always love your blog!

  4. Awww...such a sweet post. And I love that poem! You come up with the nicest, warm-and-fuzzy feeling type posts.

It's so hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner again. It's incredible how quickly time passes.

  5. Remember how looooooong it was between one Christmas and the next when we were kids? Now, as you say, it seems just like a couple of months and it's time to do it all over again.

  7. Dear Diane - this is a wonderful poem and it does suit November here as well. Although today the sun has burst forth. Do love the bare bones of the trees this time of the year and nothing like a wonderful wood fire burning. Take care and have a good day.

  8. That is such a lovely poem Diane and the illustration is gorgeous - the setting is so cute and cosy. Its nice being able to snuggle up next to a fire when you don't have to go out and just unwind! But I must say like you I feel I have just taken the tree down and now I have to think about putting it up again!!
